On March 25th, Edd Gould, the main man behind Eddsworld, dies after a very long battle with cancer.
Sure maybe i am late to find out about his death, but that doesn't change the fact that i sorely miss Edd, and equally miss the enjoyment we all got out of his animations.
I think the reason that this news passed me initially was that Edd wasn't brought down by his illness. He didn't mention it in his animations, and even when a video was brought out with news about his illness he didn't film it himself and he almost seemed to be avoiding the camera, instead choosing to play the illness down and let Tom and Bing talk about it. The fact that he confronted cancer in an optimistic way is admirable, and it took a lot of mental strength to do this.
Sometimes I believed that his videos were some of the only decent animations going on Youtube, and the settings he used and the voice actors made the Eddsworld series very down to earth, but they still had a certain edge of lunacy and zaniness. The voice actors were simply friends of his, and you could feel that the actors had a certain connection because of this, and the atmosphere of the videos showed us that the animations were clearly a lot of fun for Edd and his team to create. It was a fresh angle on animation production that was rid of all of the sterile, artificial works that you may find on Youtube channels such as Machinima (to name just one) but still kept a hint of professionalism and outstanding quality.
The opportunity to chat with Edd was handed to me thanks to this very website and the comics that Edd created on his own channel [link]
where at the time of writing there is no indication of his death - just a load of awesome comics and animations. After commenting on a few of his comics and the main page, I was absolutely delighted to find that Edd had replied to my message. We conversed, and eventually I asked him to view my work. He told me to go easy on the blue filter! Looking back, this opportunity to chat with a true legend is something that i will hold dear to me - not often do you see a major name in an industry chat with the fans, and sometimes i feel that this has been lost recently. But Edd's dedication to the fans is unique, and ultimately brilliant.
Even if no one reads this, i'm just glad to talk about how much i miss the guy. He was a big part of my internet experience in retrospect, and although that doesn't sound like much i practically live on the internet!
You will be missed Edd, by me and many others.
